The Architect and the Accessible City

"Alone and small in the street, my self-awareness heightens. Large swarms of hurried people part when they see me approaching. My whole identity has changed in the eyes of the city within minutes. My wheelchair is my fortress and the enemy. With its large spindly wheels as my first and only defence, they are also my burden. Jarred into an utterly complex version of what I formerly knew as reality, my eyes begin scrutinising and dissecting the cobbled street surface ahead into zones which I can and cannot access. Never before had I seen the streetscape in such meticulous detail. Tiny height differences such as curbs and grooves between cobbles become mountains, cruelly halting progress and making small advances, exhausting. Whilst battling physical obstructions, I myself have become one. If the pavements were widened, perhaps disabled citizens wouldn’t be seen as causing an obstruction. (...)"

The essay "A day in the life of a wheelchair user: navigating Lincoln" by Sophia Bannert won the Berkeley Prize. With the prize, the Department of Architecture at the University of Berkeley aims to promote "the investigation of architecture as a social art."

Wheelchair Superstar

"Küschall decided to use graphene to revolutionise the performance of contemporary wheelchairs with a frame that is 30 per cent lighter and 20 per cent stronger compared to classic carbon-fibre wheelchairs.
Our goal was to design the best wheelchair in the world for the most active wheelchair users."

A Floating Wheelchair

Port Philip Council launched floating beach wheelchairs and wheelchair-friendly beach matting at St Kilda Lifesaving Club on Saturday and Ms Lawrie-Jones was the first one in the water after the launch (literally via The Age).

"I'd come down to watch the waves, but I couldn't go in. It made me really sad. I was such a water baby when I was a kid. Dad and I used to go to the beach all the time.
It feels amazing. It brought back so many memories of being a kid. I'll be here all the time now, this is really going to change lives".

Adaptive Wheelchair Bowling Equipment

"The first piece of equipment that wheelchair bowlers can use is a ball ramp. Ball ramps are perfect for bowlers who have limited range of motion because they allow the user to easily control the ball’s release from their lap."

"An additional tool is the grip handle bowling ball. For wheelchair users, the grip handle allows for better power and easier control by allowing them to use a grip handle rather than finger holes. There are two parts to this special ball—a spring-loaded handle, and the bowling ball. "

"Finally, there are bowling ball pushers. These super simple tools give the bowler control over the force and the angle of their roll."

A Wheelchair Designed for Dancers

A "University of South Florida-born power wheelchair" is designed to give its ussers more freedom of movement allowing them to express themselves, to dance. Wheelchairs, so far, have been too rigid for modern dance dance. Merry Lynn Morris's "Rolling Dance Chair, however, is flexible. Morris began working on the fance chair five years ago, the first prototype debuted in 2013.
"Through a wireless connection with the accelerometer and other motion sensors on the user's phone, the chair can sense the person is leaning, and lean with them. The wheels are tucked away to prevent costumes from getting tangled. And like a Segway (which partially served as a design precedent), the chair moves faster the more the user leans." (mental_floss)

Sirens Resort: Accessibility in Loutraki, Greece

"Sirens offers one of the best wheelchair travel experiences in the world. This Mediterranean resort is equipped with wheelchair accessible rooms throughout as well as showers that offer roll in access. The property features nice wide walkways that make navigation easy. It also has the distinction of being one of the only resorts in the world that offers direct access to the ocean. A ramp extends into the sea." (CurbFree)

A Teepee-Like Complex with a Spiral Pool for Wheelchair Users

"This enchanting cluster of teepee-like structures located in the mountains of Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture functions as a facility for two women in their sixties who operate a food delivery service for the elderly and a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities, proving that ingenious design can be used to great effect in the service and health industries."

"Two blocks contain living quarters for the clients, while a guest room and a spiral-shaped pool designed to accommodate wheelchair users make up the other." (Curbed)

4 Wheel City

Okay, I am - to put it euphemistically - not fond of rap music, not at all. But you do not have to like that kind of music to like these musicians. They are different, i.e., their message is different, no, special.

- About
"4 Wheel City is an entertainment organization started by Namel “Tapwaterz”Norris and Ricardo “Rickfire” Velasquez two talented hip-hop artists and motivational speakers in wheelchairs due to gun violence. Our mission is to use hip-hop music and culture to create more opportunities for the disabled and inspire people not to give up in life. In addition, show the world that people with disabilities can still have talents, dreams, and deserve to be treated equal. 4 Wheel City performs original music as well as motivational speak at hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, fundraisers, and events, all over the world."

- History
"Ricardo Velasquez was walking home after a party when he noticed a commotion ahead of him, with people running in all directions. Determined to mind his own business, the high school senior kept heading toward his building in the Bronx housing project. Suddenly he heard someone shout, “He’s got a gun!”

“The next thing I know I’m on the ground bleeding,” Velasquez, 32, recalls of that night 13 years ago. “I was screaming, and it was crazy. It happened just that quick.”

Fast-forward three years.

A resident of the same New York neighborhood, 17-year-old Namel Norris was at his sister’s birthday party when his cousin started playing with a gun. The weapon accidentally fired, striking Norris in the neck and paralyzing him from the chest down."

- New Mission
"The two young men had never met, yet they shared much in common. Both sustained spinal cord injuries and were in wheelchairs. Both felt shunned by the people they used to hang out with. The most difficult part, says Velasquez, was “seeing how people pulled away from me-friends, family members. It’s not fair.”

Before the accident, Norris, now 27, had been an avid basketball player and member of a rap group trying to make it in the music industry. “It wasn’t the same,” he says. “They kind of moved on without me.”"(MORE)

Avatars With Wheelchair Option

"In a move that will make Xbox One avatars significantly more inclusive for gamers, Microsoft is planning to make wheelchair options available." (The Independent)

"Microsoft is adding wheelchair options for its Xbox avatars, as well as what look like some visual tweaks. Phil Spencer, the company's Xbox head, confirmed that the wheelchair additions were not "far off," after responding to a question on the subject on Twitter. The company's Mike Ybarra then tweeted a "sneak peek" of the update showing two avatars using distinctly Xbox-themed wheelchairs" (The Verge).

Accessible Archeology

Paestum, formerly an ancient Greek city, is now an archeological site in southern Italy (Wikipedia). The head of the site, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, was the first person today to move on the site's wheelchair accessible pathways. It is - for the first time - possible to enter an ancient Greek temple in a wheelchair. Zuchtriegel expressed great respect for all those who move with a wheelchair in a world in which still a lot needs to be done to make it more accessible (Napoli).
