On 24 June, President Obama designated a new monument, the "Stonewall National Monument" in New York City to honour the LGBT equality movement. It is the very place where on 28 June 1969, the modern LGBT civil rights movement started in response to a police raid.
"In addition to protecting more land and water than any President in history -- more than 265 million acres -- President Obama has sought to protect places that are diverse, culturally and historically significant, and that reflect the story of all Americans."(The White House)
